Superhero films Number 7
The first of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies makes it in at number 7 of our list of superhero films, the one superhero that raises the discussion whether he is even an actual superhero as he has no superhero powers to his disposal. However this point will not be discussed any further, as no superhero powers or not, to the people of Gotham City he is a true saviour and a hero to them all. There was a lot of pressure on Nolan’s production of Batman after we had experienced the totally disastrous direction of Joel Schumacher on the franchise and ruining the credibility of Batman as a Superhero. No one would have wanted to sit through another Batman and Robin comical production that made true Batman fans cringe with disbelieve of what they were watching on screen.
Nolan knew that every single element of his production would be scrutinised from every angle, from the actors to the lighting and costumes etc. The appalling production of Batman and Robin needed to be erased from our memories, for Batman to reinstall his superhero status and be taken seriously again, not that the comic fans would have accepted anyone with half good ideas into the director’s chair.
Little did we know that Christopher Nolan, director of the phenomenal Memento, would be so devoted to making a good Batman movie. Christian Bale is excellent as both Bruce Wayne and Batman, even though his deep voice has raised much discussion among fans on forums and blogs. Liam Neeson and Cillian Murphy make brilliant additions to the movie as the villains. For me however one real distinction that makes the film so good was the supporting cast of Gary Oldman as Gordon the last incorruptible cop on the force and Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as the ever dependable Lucius Fox. These strong performances really enhanced the movie and portrayed a true understanding of how important each of these characters are to the dark knight.
