The weekend football results are out
The weekend football results brought us goals, goals, goals in the second weekend of premier fixtures, with Chelsea, Arsenal and NEWCASTLE each scoring six without conceding. The momentum Chelsea are starting to build is already quite unnerving and next for them is Stoke at home and this surely looks like it will produce another landslide of goals. Wigan, who conceded 4 last weekend at home to Blackpool, would have their hands full with the champions arriving. Wigan did start brightly and for a moment last season’s shock 3-1 result to Wigan looked like it could materialise again. However Chelsea realised they had more than one gear and just accelerated away into the horizon without really breaking sweat. Wigan are next away to Spurs, hopefully for them Spurs will experience the famous ‘European hangover’.
The shock of the weekend had to have been Newcastle’s demolition of Aston Villa, but how different would the outcome have been if Carew had put away his penalty when the game was 0-0. A penalty miss also cost Utd the chance of 2 wins out of 2, as Nani missed from the spot with minutes to go when the score was 2-1. Fulham equalised in the dying minutes and yet again Utd fail to win at Craven Cottage. Arsenal predicted to get all three points at home to Blackpool were aided by the sending off of Blackpool’s Evatt and then it was purely a case of damage control for Balckpool and if Chamakh had worn his shooting boots it could have ended up in double figures for Arsenal.
Another super fixture saw City take on Liverpool Monday night. Dare I say a scintillating performance from City. Outmuscled, outplayed, Liverpool had no chance to be quite honest. Torres walked round like a sulking kid and even the ever reliable Stevie G could not pull any magic out of the bag. Things look bleak for Liverpool now as it looks like Mascherano is definitely on his way. Ok they should beat West Brom next weekend but then they are away to Birmingham and then Utd, season over before it has already started?
